Scientific Method Notes
- The scientific method is a logical, problem solving technique
- The steps of the scientific method are
- observation
- problem statement/question
- hypothesis statement
- experiment / data collection
- data analysis and conclusion statement
- OBSERVATION
- an observation is a visible or provable fact
- an inference is an opinion, or conclusion, based on observed facts
- PROBLEM STATEMENT
- careful statements lead to questions
- contains variables
- ex does the drop height affect bounce height
- Independent variable
- changes unrelated to other factors, we manipulate on purpose
- Dependent variable
- outcome of changing the independent variable
- we do not know this before we start an experiment
- Connstant
- does not change for the duration of the experiment
- HYPOTHESIS STATEMENT
- statement that expresses the expected answer to the problem statement
- EXPERIMENT
- used to test hypothesis
- collects numerical data
- compare indep and dep
- tests one variable
- DATA ANALYSIS/ CONCLUSION
- represents the data, accept or negate
